These records contain copies, as maintained by the Office of the Executive Secretariat, of correspondence to and from Congress, state highway departments, state governors, other states; department of transportation officials and personnel, Federal Highway Administration field offices, non-governmental and quasi-governmental organizations, and all branches of the United States military. The records also contain Federal Highway Administration directives, project files, and other released documents. Topics discussed in the records include the Highway Beautification Act, the United States' planned conversion to the metric system, highway construction such as that of I-420 in Georgia and that of the Long Beach Freeway in California, the gas tax, and local issues related to roads and bridges. A small portion of the series also consists of correspondence redirected to other Federal agencies.
